LinkedIn is the most underused, most powerful B2B sales, networking, and growth tool available to any business in the UK, and it costs nothing. We are lucky, genuinely lucky, to have free access to a platform this rich. Millions of users, an enormous depth of buyer data and intent signals sitting right there at your fingertips.
Any sales professional, founder, or marketer should be all over LinkedIn. Daily, not occasionally. You can source leads, market your business, sell, recruit, cheerlead your team, connect, network, and message decision makers directly, all from one platform, all for free. The strategy available to you is as diverse as it is effective. Very effective.
I’m splitting this into two parts, because the individual profile and the business page work completely differently, and most companies only ever think about one of them.
The Individual Member Page
This is where the real power sits, and most businesses underestimate it badly.
LinkedIn now has somewhere around 47 to 48 million users in the UK alone, representing the vast majority of UK adults. That’s not a niche professional network anymore, that’s near total market coverage. A huge proportion of those users sit in the prime decision making age brackets, the managers, senior managers, and department heads with budget authority who actually sign off the deals you’re chasing.
The platform is also responsible for the overwhelming majority of all B2B leads generated through social media, dwarfing what comes through other social channels combined. If you’re a sales professional, founder, or marketer and you’re not active here daily, you’re ignoring the single biggest concentration of B2B buyers available to you anywhere, for free.
Here’s the trick most individuals never use properly, second degree exposure. It’s one of the most underrated moves available, and it works on people too, not just business pages. When you comment on a post from someone with a far bigger network than yours, your name, your face, and your comment sit visible to everyone in their audience. You’ve just bought your way into thousands of new eyes without spending a penny, just by being switched on enough to engage.
For an individual sales rep, the data and connection points sitting in plain public view are genuinely remarkable. Job titles, company moves, shared connections, what someone’s been posting about lately, all of it freely available, all of it useful intelligence before you ever pick up the phone.
The Business Page
Now here’s where it gets interesting, and where even switched on companies are still missing a trick.
Personal profiles consistently and significantly outperform company pages for organic reach. A post from an individual will travel further than the same content posted from the business page almost every time. That’s not a knock on business pages, it’s just the reality of how the platform distributes content, and it’s exactly why your strategy needs both, not just one.
Company pages that post weekly grow their following considerably faster than those that post sporadically, and see meaningfully higher engagement too. Consistency matters more than most businesses give it credit for. But here’s the bit that gets missed constantly, the same second degree exposure trick that works for individuals works for business pages too, and it’s a far bigger opportunity than most companies realise.
Say your business page has 200 followers. Somewhere in your network, a connected business has 20,000. You comment on their post, from your business page, and suddenly you’ve got visibility in front of an audience a hundred times the size of your own. That’s not a paid placement, that’s not an ad spend, that’s a comment. Most businesses simply never do this, because nobody’s thought to treat the company page as something that should be actively engaging, not just broadcasting.
Humanise your business page. Give it a soul. Get it engaging with your network, your partners, your clients, your industry, rather than just posting and waiting. Businesses appreciate being supported publicly, and being seen to be keen, active, and engaged builds a kind of goodwill that a perfectly polished but silent company page never will.
The Bottom Line
LinkedIn is sitting there, free, for every business in the UK, with tens of millions of users and a level of buyer access no other platform comes close to matching. The individual profile gives you reach, intelligence, and direct access to decision makers. The business page, used properly and not just as a noticeboard, gives you a second engine for visibility through exactly the same second degree exposure trick.
Most companies use a fraction of what’s available to them here. Use all of it.
